Is your washer’s drain hose installed correctly?
A filter search can lead to the wrong repair. First compare the visible drain setup with the instructions for the model on your label.
The two models have different limits. GE’s standard standpipe arrangement starts at 30 inches, with up to 5 inches of hose inside the pipe. Maytag’s starts at 39 inches, with up to 4.5 inches inserted. GE also documents a low-drain exception that needs an installer’s review. See the model table and sources ↓
Three observations, without opening the washer
Check only what you can reach safely. Stop the cycle. Do not move or tip a washer full of water, pull its hose out, or disconnect plumbing to take these measurements. Leave an inaccessible measurement blank. Keep clear of water near electrical connections.
- A · Opening height
- Measure from the floor supporting the washer to the open top of the drain pipe. A raised platform or a different floor level needs an installer’s check.
- B · Insertion
- Record only the hose extending inside the drain opening. If that length is hidden or unknown, leave it unmeasured.
- C · Air gap
- Look for open space around the hose. A securing tie holds the hose in place; tape sealing the opening does a different job.
Compare your measurements
Check the visible drain setup
Use inches; enter 4½ as 4.5. Leave measurements blank if you cannot check safely. The result compares your observations with the manual and does not identify a failed part.
This is a partial installation check. Pipe diameter, drain capacity, clogs, pump condition, leveling and local plumbing requirements have not been checked. If water remains, use the next-step guidance below.
Use the row for your exact model
These are standard standpipe limits, in inches. Other drains and model revisions need their own instructions. This table remains available when the interactive checker is unavailable.

Maytag also specifies a standpipe carry-away capacity of 17 gallons per minute. Diameter alone does not establish capacity or rule out a household blockage. Installation document, page 3 ↗
