Clothes dryer · Check result and next step

Dryer gets hot but clothes stay damp: choose the right route

Heat reaching the clothes does not establish that moisture can leave the load. Identify a vented or ventless design, then record the cycle, starting wetness and documented moisture-removal route.

Heating and moisture removal are separate results

Warm laundry tells you heat reached the load; it is not a heater test. Whirlpool describes damp loads and long drying times with restricted vent airflow. On a vented dryer, note accessible lint-screen condition and safe observations at the outside outlet. Do not run the dryer with its exhaust disconnected indoors to see whether it dries faster.

A heat-pump dryer uses a different moisture route. Samsung supplies heat-pump documentation for the UK DV90T5240AW/S2. Use that model’s tank, drain arrangement and filter instructions rather than importing a vented-dryer airflow test. A full container alert is a distinct complaint from laundry remaining damp.

An early finish differs from a full cycle with damp clothes

Automatic cycles use the model’s sensing and selected dryness; timed cycles follow a duration. Preserve which one ended and whether it ended early. A small or mixed load, chosen dryness and starting wetness can change the result. Avoid comparing a heavy towel load with a small mixed load and calling the difference a new fault.

Record the preceding washer spin as well. A load entering the dryer wetter than usual creates more moisture to remove. That history cannot prove the dryer is healthy, but it prevents comparing two different starting conditions. If the washer failed to spin, use its drain/spin route before adding repeated dryer cycles.

Know what to ask before buying a sensor or heater

For service, give the dryer type, exact suffix, chosen cycle, load and result. Ask whether the proposed part explains the observed heat and moisture-removal problem. A hot cabinet, weak discharge, a tank alert and an early automatic finish are different observations; a list of possible parts does not connect them to a component diagnosis.

Use the result to choose the next step

These branches are our interpretation of the linked guidance. They narrow the next action; they do not identify a failed component.

Vented dryer: hot load, weak outside airflow

The moisture discharge route needs attention before another drying comparison.

Next action
Use the manual for lint-screen care and arrange cleaning or correction of an inaccessible vent. Keep the exhaust connected and do not bypass thermal protection.
How to verify
After the route is made safe, compare a similar load and record the completed drying result.
Stop point
Stop for overheating, a burning smell or repeated protection trips.
Vented-dryer long-time checks →

Heat-pump dryer: tank alert returned

The alert is a condensate-handling complaint, not a failed-heater conclusion.

Next action
Follow the exact manual for emptying and reseating the container or checking the documented drain arrangement. Record the complete alert.
How to verify
The alert clears and does not recur under the documented arrangement.
Stop point
Stop for water approaching electrical parts or an alert that persists after the supported check.

Automatic cycle ends early; load remains damp

Cycle, selected dryness and sensing conditions remain relevant.

Next action
Use the model’s load and cycle guidance. Record actual elapsed time and which items are damp; do not bridge sensor contacts or fit a part from this result alone.
How to verify
A comparable suitable load reaches the intended dryness after supported setup changes.
Stop point
Arrange service if the same complaint repeats with a clear supported moisture route.

Laundry entered wetter than usual

The starting load changed; the dryer comparison is not equivalent.

Next action
Check whether the washer completed its intended final spin. Correct that separate complaint within the washer manual before comparing dryer performance.
How to verify
Compare similar loads with similar starting wetness and the same supported dryer setup.
Stop point
Do not compensate for a fault by stacking repeated hot cycles.

Before accepting a parts quote

  • Is the estimate based on a vented or heat-pump design?
  • What confirmed the proposed heater or sensor fault?
  • Will the completed repair be checked with a comparable load and the moisture route restored?

Keep the complete model, sales region, observation and check result with the quote. A catalog match establishes compatibility, not the cause of the complaint.

Questions that follow this check

Does heat rule out a heater fault?

No. Feeling warm establishes only that some heat reached the load. It does not quantify heat output or test the complete heating circuit.

Should I just add more timed drying?

Use only cycles permitted by the manual after the moisture route is safe. Repeated extra heat is not a correction for a restricted vent, recurring container alert or overheating.
